Fujisawa Taiwan: marketing and distribution

The leading Japanese pharmaceutical company. for more than 15 years

Fujisawa Taiwan, a subsidiary of Fujisawa Pharmaceutical, was established in 1962 and holds the longest history among the Fujisawa Group.

Fujisawa Taiwan markets and distributes branded products and has offices located in northern, central and southern Taiwan.

The strong marketing and distribution network with significant customer contacts in hospital, general practitioner and pharmacy segments has made Fujisawa Taiwan the leading Japanese pharmaceutical company for more than 15 years, claiming one of the leading positions in the CNS and transplant field.

Pipeline products
Firmly established in the pharmaceutical market, the company has developed an ongoing pipeline of drug programs. Fujisawa Taiwan’s flagship products include:

Prograf® (tacrolimus capsules and injection)

  • Prograf suppresses the immune system, preventing rejection of transplanted organs.
  • Prograf contributes significantly to Fujisawa Taiwan’s business performance and further strengthens its position as the cornerstone of immunosuppressants for organ transplantation.

Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment)

  • Protopic is an ointment applied topically to the affected skin of patients with atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema.
  • Since its debut in 2002 as the first novel prescription product in treatment of eczema, Protopic has been widely used.

Stilnox® (zolpidem tablet)

  • Stilnox, licensed from Sanofi-Aventis, is a non-benzodiazepine drug with a rapid onset of action to provide a sleep pattern close to natural sleep.

Fujisawa Taiwan has a particular strong presence in CNS, thanks to contribution of CNS products and robust sales of Stilnox.

The company continues to build up its pipeline with new additions; a representative from Fujisawa Taiwan explained some recent agreements to Partnering Focus.

”We reached an agreement with Teijin Pharma to acquire the Taiwanese marketing and development right for Bonalfa® in September 2004. Developed by Teijin Pharma, Bonalfa is an active vitamin D3 preparation for prescription use. It is mainly used for the treatment of hyperkeratosis and psoriasis vulgaris.”

Fujisawa Taiwan is also interested in in-licensing late stage development products and marketed products in central nervous system disease, urology, immunology, infectious disease, dermatology and cardiovascular disease, and exploring niche markets.

2005 is set to be a big year in regards of company growth. Taiwan Yamanouchi and Fujisawa Taiwan will merge on October 1st 2005 and embark on a fresh start as Astellas Pharma Taiwan, Inc.

Astellas Pharma Taiwan, Inc. will be around the 13th largest pharmaceutical company in Taiwan in terms of annual sales (combined sales of Fujisawa Taiwan and Taiwan Yamanouchi for the year of 2004—3Q Moving Annual Total, IMS Taiwan).

The uniting of the two companies will create an even stronger one, cementing its presence not only by expanding the existing products and franchises but also by exploring other therapeutic categories to retain a leading position in targeted markets.
