Valera Pharmaceuticals (originally Hydro Med Sciences) was founded in 1972 and is credited with the development of soft contact lenses which were sold to Allergan in 1987. The company completed a $7 million private placement of a Series A Convertible Preferred Stock in January 2002. Until this point, Hydro Med Sciences had been a wholly owned subsidiary of GP Strategies. Hydro Med Sciences changed its name to Valera Pharmaceuticals in September 2003. Today, Valera Pharmaceuticals focuses on specialty drug delivery with its unique hydrogel-based Hydron technology.
